Wild garlic, also known as ramsons, is a perennial plant that belongs to the Allium family. It is native to Europe and Asia and is commonly found growing in woodland areas, particularly in damp or shady conditions. Wild garlic has broad, flat leaves that have a distinct garlic scent and flavour, and it produces white or pale pink flowers in the spring. The leaves, bulbs, and flowers of wild garlic are all edible and can be used in a variety of culinary dishes, particularly in salads, soups, and pesto. Wild garlic is also valued for its health benefits, as it contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Wild Garlic Ramsons

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds indoors in early spring, 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 2-3 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-65°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 10-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves, after the last expected frost date.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden in early spring, after the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a shaded or partially shaded location with moist, well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 2-3 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Ramsons prefers a partially shaded location with moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Harvest leaves and bulbs when they have reached their full size, usually in early to mid-spring.
  • Use Ramsons leaves and bulbs in cooking to add a garlic flavor to dishes such as soups, stews, and sauces.
