Early purple sprouting broccoli is a cool-season vegetable that has delicious and nutritious purple-hued florets. It is a hardy plant that can survive frost and thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. The plants can grow up to 2-3 feet tall and have attractive blue-green foliage. Early purple sprouting broccoli produces its first flush of purple-hued florets in late winter or early spring, providing an early harvest for gardeners. The florets are tender and have a slightly sweeter taste compared to regular broccoli. They can be eaten raw in salads, steamed, or roasted. Additionally, the leaves and stalks are edible and can be used in a variety of dishes, including soups and stir-fries. Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli is also a great source of nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and fiber.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli

Indoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds in trays or modules filled with seed compost in March or April
  • Plant one seed per module or thin to one seedling per module after germination
  • Keep the soil moist and place in a warm, bright spot
  • Transplant seedlings outside after 4-6 weeks, once they have developed their second set of leaves

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds directly into prepared soil in late spring or early summer
  • Plant seeds 2-3cm deep and 10-15cm apart, in rows spaced 30cm apart
  • Water regularly and keep the area free of weeds
  • Thin seedlings to one plant every 30cm once they are big enough to handle

Growing:

  • Broccoli prefers a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter
  • Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged
  • Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season
  • Harvest the broccoli heads when they are firm and tight, but before the yellow flowers appear
  • Leave the plants in the ground to produce side shoots, which can be harvested later in the season
