Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
- Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 70-75°F.
- Seedlings should emerge in 14-21 days.
- Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
- Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 inches tall and have at least 4-6 leaves.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last expected frost date.
- Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
- Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 6-8 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
- Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
- Thin seedlings when they are 4-6 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.
Growing
- Italian Giant parsley prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
- Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
- Protect plants from pests, such as aphids and caterpillars, by using row covers or spraying with neem oil.
- Harvest leaves as needed, taking care not to remove more than one-third of the plant at a time.
- Italian Giant parsley is a biennial, so it will produce leaves in its first year and flower in its second year. If you want to prolong the life of the plant, remove the flower stalks as soon as they appear.
