Coriander, also known as cilantro, is a herb that is commonly used in cooking to add flavour and aroma to a variety of dishes. It has a distinctive flavour that is often described as citrusy, with hints of lemon and sage. Coriander is used in a variety of cuisines, including Mexican, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian. It can be used in fresh or dried form, and is often added to curries, soups, stews, and salsas. Coriander is also a popular ingredient in herb spreads and dips, such as guacamole and hummus. In addition to its culinary uses, coriander is believed to have a range of health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and digestive properties. It is also a good source of vitamins A and C.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Coriander

Indoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds in pots or trays filled with seed compost.
  • Press the seeds gently into the surface of the compost and cover with a thin layer of compost.
  • Water the compost and cover the pot or tray with a clear plastic bag or lid to retain moisture.
  • Place the pot or tray in a warm, bright spot but out of direct sunlight.
  • Once the seedlings have grown to around 2-3 inches in height, thin them out to leave one seedling per pot or space them out evenly in a larger container.
  • Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged, and feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds in well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot.
  • Make a shallow trench in the soil and sow the seeds thinly along the trench.
  • Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and water gently.
  • Once the seedlings have grown to around 2-3 inches in height, thin them out to leave one seedling per 4 inches.
  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

Growing:

  • Coriander prefers a warm, sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained soil.
  • Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging the soil.
  • Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
  • Harvest the leaves as required once the plant has grown to around 6 inches in height.
  • For a continuous supply of leaves, sow seeds every 3-4 weeks.
