Wild rocket, also known as arugula or rucola, is a type of leafy green that has a distinctive peppery and slightly bitter flavour. It is commonly used in salads, sandwiches, and as a pizza topping. Wild rocket is easy to grow and is often used as a cut-and-come-again crop, meaning that you can harvest the leaves multiple times throughout the growing season. It is also a great source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Wild Rocket

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds indoors in early spring, 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-65°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 5-7 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 2-3 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Wild rocket prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Harvest leaves when they are 2-3 inches long.
  • Clip leaves as needed, taking care not to remove more than one-third of the plant at a time.
  • Leaves can be harvested throughout the growing season, but flavor is best when plants are young.
