Sowing and Growing Guide

Golden West Californian Poppy

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/8 inch deep, 1-2 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 65-75°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 10-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden in early spring after the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that is not too rich in nutrients.
  • Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep and 6-12 inches apart in rows or scattered in a bed.
  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 1-2 inches tall, leaving 6-12 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Golden West Californian Poppy prefers well-draining soil that is not too rich in nutrients.
  • Water regularly, but do not overwater as it can cause root rot.
  • Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous blooming.
  • Fertilization is not usually necessary, but a light feeding of a balanced fertilizer in early spring can help promote growth and blooming.
  • Protect plants from slugs and snails, which can damage foliage and flowers.
  • Harvest flowers as desired for cut flowers, leaving some on the plant to produce seeds for the next growing season.
