Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Soak seeds overnight in water to help speed up germination.
- Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, 1-2 seeds per cell.
- Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-65°F.
- Seedlings should emerge in 10-14 days.
- Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
- Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a week before transplanting.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last expected frost date.
- Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil.
- Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
- Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
- Provide support for the plants to climb, such as a trellis or netting.
- Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 4-6 inches between plants.
