Sowing and Growing Guide

Royal Mixed Sweet Pea

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Soak seeds overnight in water to help speed up germination.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, 1-2 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-65°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 10-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a week before transplanting.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil.
  • Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Provide support for the plants to climb, such as a trellis or netting.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 4-6 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Royal Mixed Sweet Peas prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Pinch off spent blooms to encourage more blooms to form.
  • Provide support for the plants to climb as they grow.
  • Harvest sweet pea blooms when they are fully open, but before they start to wilt.
