Blauwschokker Pea is an heirloom variety of garden pea (Pisum sativum) that originates from Holland. It is known for its striking purple pods that contain sweet, flavourful peas. The plant is a climbing vine that can reach up to 6 feet tall and requires support for optimal growth. The peas can be eaten fresh or used in soups, stews, and other dishes. Blauwschokker Peas are also popular for their ornamental value, with their vibrant purple flowers and pods adding a splash of colour to any garden.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Blauwschokker Pea

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Use deep containers, at least 6 inches deep, to accommodate the long taproots of peas.
  • Fill the containers with potting mix and sow seeds 1 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per container.
  • Water the soil and cover the containers with plastic wrap or a humidity dome to retain moisture.
  • Keep the containers in a cool location with temperatures around 60°F until the seeds germinate.
  • Once the seedlings emerge, remove the cover and place the containers in a bright location with temperatures around 50-60°F.
  • Thin the seedlings to one per container when they are 2-3 inches tall.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date when soil temperatures reach at least 45°F.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Water the soil and keep it moist until the seeds germinate.
  • Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to 4-6 inches apart.

Growing

  • Blauwschokker peas prefer cool weather and should be grown in spring or fall.
  • Provide a trellis or support for the plants to climb on as they grow.
  • Water the plants deeply once a week, more frequently during hot, dry weather.
  • Fertilize the plants once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Harvest the peas when the pods are plump and full, but before they become too large and tough.
  • Regular harvesting will encourage the plants to produce more peas.
  • After harvesting, cut the plants at the base and compost them.
