Sowing and Growing Guide

Beth Alpha F1 Cucumber

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost date or when soil temperature reaches at least 65°F.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 70-85°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they have at least 2-3 sets of true leaves and all danger of frost has passed.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden when soil temperature reaches at least 65°F and all danger of frost has passed.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 3-4 inches apart in rows spaced 4-6 feet apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they have developed their first true leaves, leaving 12-18 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Beth Alpha F1 cucumbers prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize every 3-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Train vines to climb a trellis or support to save space and prevent fruit from touching the ground.
  • Harvest cucumbers when they are 4-6 inches long for best flavor and texture.
  • Check plants daily for pests, such as cucumber beetles, and remove by hand or use organic pest control methods.
