Sowing and Growing Guide
Chives Medium Leaf
Indoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds indoors in trays or pots around 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost.
- Fill the tray or pots with seed-starting mix and sprinkle the seeds on top. Cover with a thin layer of soil.
- Keep the soil moist and place the tray or pots in a warm, bright location or under grow lights.
- The seeds should germinate within 7-14 days.
- Thin the seedlings to about 2-3 inches apart when they have developed their first true leaves.
- Transplant the seedlings to larger pots when they outgrow their starter containers, or move them outdoors when the soil has warmed up and there is no longer a risk of frost.
Outdoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds outdoors in early spring or fall, when the soil temperature has reached at least 60°F (15.5°C).
- Choose a sunny or partially shaded location with well-draining soil.
- Plant the seeds in shallow trenches about 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart. Cover with a thin layer of soil.
- Keep the soil moist and thin the seedlings to about 6 inches apart when they have developed their first true leaves.
- Harvest the chives when they are about 6-8 inches tall, leaving at least 2 inches of foliage to allow the plant to continue growing.
Growing:
- Chives prefer well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Add organic matter such as compost or aged manure to improve soil quality.
- Water the plants regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Fertilize the plants every 4-6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
- Pinch back the flowers when they appear to encourage the plant to produce more leaves.
- Harvest the chives by cutting the leaves with scissors or pruning shears, leaving at least 2 inches of foliage to allow the plant to continue growing.
