Cayenne chili peppers are a type of spicy pepper that is widely used in cooking due to its unique flavour and heat. The peppers are long and slender, ranging from 2 to 5 inches in length, and have a bright red colour when fully ripe. They are typically used in ground or powdered form to add heat to dishes such as chili, stews, and soups, or to create hot sauces and marinades. Cayenne peppers are high in vitamin C, vitamin B6, and antioxidants, making them a healthy addition to meals. They are also relatively easy to grow and maintain, making them a popular choice. Cayenne chili peppers can be harvested when they are fully ripe and can be stored for several months in a dry and cool place. Overall, Chilli de Cayenne is a versatile and flavourful pepper that adds a delicious kick to a variety of dishes.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Chilli de Cayenne

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds indoors in mid to late winter, about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • Fill small pots or trays with a good quality seed starting mix.
  • Sow 2-3 seeds per pot or cell, about 1/4 inch deep.
  • Water the soil well and cover with plastic wrap or a humidity dome to maintain moisture.
  • Place the pots or trays under grow lights or in a sunny, warm location with consistent temperatures around 70°F (21°C).
  • Seedlings should emerge in 1-2 weeks. Once they do, remove the plastic wrap or humidity dome and keep the soil consistently moist.
  • When the seedlings have their first true leaves, thin to one seedling per pot or cell and fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds outdoors after the last frost when the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C).
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil and amend with organic matter if necessary.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart.
  • Water the soil well and keep consistently moist until seedlings emerge in 1-2 weeks.
  • Thin seedlings to 18-24 inches apart once they have their first true leaves.
  • Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season.

Growing

  • Chilli de Cayenne prefers full sun and well-draining soil.
  • Water regularly, aiming to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
  • Pinch back the tips of the plants when they reach about 6-8 inches tall to encourage bushier growth and more fruit production.
  • Harvest chillies when they are red and fully ripe, usually around 70-80 days after transplanting.
  • Handle chillies with gloves and wash hands thoroughly after harvesting as the capsaicin in the chillies can irritate skin and eyes.
