Lunar white carrots are a unique and less common type of carrot. Unlike the traditional orange carrots, lunar white carrots have a creamy white colour. They have a similar taste and texture to orange carrots although they have a slightly milder and sweeter flavour. Lunar carrots can be used in various culinary preparations, including raw in salads, roasted, steamed, or used in soups and stews. They add an interesting visual contrast to dishes and can be a fun alternative to the typical orange carrots. In terms of nutritional value, lunar white carrots still provide dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals similar to their orange counterparts.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Carrot - Lunar White

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-65°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 10-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 3-4 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Lunar White carrots prefer well-draining soil that is loose and free of stones.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist.
  • Thin plants as they grow to ensure proper spacing and promote root development.
  • Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Harvest carrots when they reach the desired size, usually around 2-3 inches in diameter.
  • Store harvested carrots in a cool, dark place to maintain their freshness.
