Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 2-4 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Carrot - Cosmic Purple prefers well-draining soil that is loose and free of rocks.
  • Water consistently to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods.
  • Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer once a month.
  • Protect young seedlings from pests, such as carrot flies, by covering with a floating row cover.
  • Harvest carrots when they have reached the desired size, typically around 60-70 days after sowing.
  • Store harvested carrots in a cool, humid place, such as a refrigerator or root cellar.
