Sowing and Growing Guide
Pak Choi - Green Stem
Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
- Keep the soil moist and at a temperature of 70-75°F for optimal germination.
- Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
- Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell or transplant them to individual containers.
- Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 weeks old and have 4-6 leaves.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last expected frost date.
- Choose a location with partial shade to protect the plants from excessive heat.
- Prepare the soil by loosening it and removing any debris.
- Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 6-8 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
- Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the germination and growing process.
- Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.
Growing
- Pak Choi prefers well-draining soil and consistent moisture.
- Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during hot and dry periods.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks to promote healthy growth.
- Provide partial shade or use shade cloth during hot summer months to prevent bolting.
- Harvest the outer leaves when they reach desired size, usually around 6-8 weeks after sowing.
- For continuous harvest, pick outer leaves while leaving the inner leaves to grow.
