Grano Violetto broad beans are a beautiful and flavourful variety of broad bean that originates from Italy. This heirloom bean variety is highly valued for its tender, meaty texture and rich, nutty flavour. The plants can grow up to 3-4 feet tall and 2 feet wide, with sturdy stems and large, lush green foliage. Grano Violetto broad beans are typically harvested when they are still young and tender, at around 3-4 inches in length. They have a distinctive shape, with a flat, slightly curved pod that is deep purple in colour. The beans inside are also deep purple in colour. Grano Violetto broad beans are a popular ingredient in Italian cuisine, and can be used in a variety of dishes, including soups, stews, and salads. They are also high in protein and fiber, making them a nutritious addition to any diet.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Grano Violetto Broad Bean

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area.
  • Use a good quality seed starting mix and sow seeds 2 inches deep.
  • Keep the soil moist and warm, around 65-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • When seedlings have two sets of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and grow them until they are 4-6 inches tall.
  • Transplant outdoors after the last expected frost when soil temperatures reach at least 50°F.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last expected frost date in your area.
  • Choose a sunny, well-draining location with loose soil.
  • Sow seeds 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings to 12 inches apart when they are 4-6 inches tall.

Growing

  • Water plants deeply once a week, or more often during hot, dry weather.
  • Pinch off the tips of the plants when they reach 6 inches tall to encourage bushier growth.
  • Stake plants if necessary to prevent them from falling over.
  • Harvest when the beans are plump and the pods are firm, but before they start to yellow and dry out.
