Sowing and Growing Guide

Genovese Basil

Indoor Sowing:

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • Fill a seed tray with seed compost and press the soil down gently.
  • Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of the compost and cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite.
  • Water the tray and cover with a clear plastic lid or plastic wrap to retain moisture.
  • Place the tray in a warm, bright spot, ideally around 20°C.
  • Once the seedlings have developed their first set of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots.
  • Water regularly and feed with a balanced fertilizer every two weeks.

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Wait until all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up in the spring.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil.
  • Prepare the soil by removing any weeds and adding compost or well-rotted manure.
  • Sow the seeds thinly and cover with a thin layer of soil.
  • Water gently and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Thin the seedlings to one plant every 20-30cm.
  • Water regularly and feed with a balanced fertilizer every two weeks.

Growing:

  • Genovese basil prefers a warm, sunny location with well-draining soil.
  • Water regularly and avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
  • Pinch off the tips of the basil plants to encourage bushy growth and to prevent them from bolting.
  • Harvest the leaves as needed, and pick off any flowers as soon as they appear.
  • Protect the plants from slugs and snails, which can be attracted to the young leaves.
