Sowing and Growing Guide

Outdoor Girl Tomato

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 70-80°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last expected frost date when they are at least 6 inches tall and have developed sturdy stems.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 2-3 feet apart in rows spaced 3-4 feet apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 1-2 feet between plants.

Growing

  • Moneymaker tomatoes prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Stake or cage the plants for support as they grow taller.
  • Prune the plants to remove suckers that grow in the crotch between the main stem and branches.
  • Harvest tomatoes when they are fully ripe and have reached their full color.
  • Store harvested tomatoes in a cool, dry place, such as a root cellar or refrigerator.
