Sowing and Growing Guide

Knee High Mixture Sweet Pea

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Use seed trays or pots filled with seed starting mix, and sow seeds 1/2 inch deep.
  • Keep soil moist and warm, at a temperature between 60-75°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 10-14 days.
  • When the seedlings have their first true leaves, transplant them into individual pots or cell packs.
  • Once the danger of frost has passed and the seedlings have grown 6-8 inches tall, plant them outside.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost date in a location with full sun to partial shade.
  • Prepare the soil by adding organic matter and ensuring good drainage.
  • Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart.
  • Water the seeds immediately after planting and regularly thereafter to keep the soil evenly moist.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving the strongest plants spaced 6-8 inches apart.

Growing

  • Knee High Mixture Sweet Peas prefer a site with full sun to partial shade and moist, well-draining soil.
  • Water regularly and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.
  • Provide support for the plants to climb, such as a trellis or fence.
  • Pinch back the tips of the vines to encourage branching and more blooms.
  • Deadhead the spent blooms to encourage more flowering.
  • Harvest blooms when they are just starting to open for the longest vase life.
  • Store cut blooms in a cool location in water.
