Sowing and Growing Guide
Red Sun Sunflower
Indoor Sowing
- Sow seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
- Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 70-75°F.
- Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.
- Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
- Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost when they are about 6 inches tall and have a few sets of true leaves.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last frost date and when the soil temperature is at least 60°F.
- Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost or other organic matter.
- Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 6-12 inches apart, depending on the variety.
- Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged, until the seedlings emerge.
- Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 12-24 inches between plants.
Growing
- Red Sun sunflowers prefer full sun and well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
- Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
- Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season.
- Provide support for the plants, such as a stake or trellis, as they grow taller.
- Deadhead the flowers as they fade to encourage more blooms.
- Harvest the seeds when the flower heads turn brown and the backs of the heads are yellow.
- Hang the heads upside down in a dry, airy location until the seeds are completely dry, then remove them from the head and store them in a cool, dry place.
