Sowing and Growing Guide

Red Sun Sunflower

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 70-75°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost when they are about 6 inches tall and have a few sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last frost date and when the soil temperature is at least 60°F.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost or other organic matter.
  • Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 6-12 inches apart, depending on the variety.
  • Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged, until the seedlings emerge.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 12-24 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Red Sun sunflowers prefer full sun and well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season.
  • Provide support for the plants, such as a stake or trellis, as they grow taller.
  • Deadhead the flowers as they fade to encourage more blooms.
  • Harvest the seeds when the flower heads turn brown and the backs of the heads are yellow.
  • Hang the heads upside down in a dry, airy location until the seeds are completely dry, then remove them from the head and store them in a cool, dry place.
