Medania spinach is rich in vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium and its leaves are smooth and tender, making it a popular choice for fresh eating. Sowing and Growing Guide

Spinach Medania

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with a good quality seed starting mix.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 1 inch apart in rows.
  • Water gently and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Place the trays in a warm location with good sunlight exposure (a south-facing window works well).
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.
  • Once the seedlings have developed their first set of true leaves, thin them to 2-3 inches apart.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow spinach seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring.
  • Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, 2-3 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Water gently and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 4-6 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Spinach Medania prefers moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Harvest outer leaves when they are 3-4 inches long, leaving the inner leaves to continue growing.
  • Harvest the entire plant once it has started to bolt (send up a flower stalk), as the leaves become tough and bitter at this point.
  • Store harvested spinach in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
