Sowing and Growing Guide
Matador Spinach
Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 1-2 seeds per cell.
- Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 50-60°F.
- Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
- Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
- Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date, or as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring.
- Choose a location with well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
- Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
- Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
- Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.
Growing
- Matador spinach prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter and has a pH of 6.0-7.0.
- Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
- Harvest outer leaves when they are 4-6 inches long, leaving the center leaves to continue growing.
- For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season.
- Protect from pests, such as leaf miners and aphids, by covering with a floating row cover or using an organic pesticide if necessary.
