Sowing and Growing Guide

Matador Spinach

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 1-2 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 50-60°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date, or as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring.
  • Choose a location with well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Matador spinach prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter and has a pH of 6.0-7.0.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Harvest outer leaves when they are 4-6 inches long, leaving the center leaves to continue growing.
  • For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season.
  • Protect from pests, such as leaf miners and aphids, by covering with a floating row cover or using an organic pesticide if necessary.
