Sowing and Growing Guide
Pea - Carouby De Maussane
Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Use deep containers, at least 15 cm deep, to accommodate the long taproots of peas.
- Fill the containers with potting mix and sow seeds 2.5 cm deep, 2-3 seeds per container.
- Water the soil and cover the containers with plastic wrap or a humidity dome to retain moisture.
- Keep the containers in a cool location with temperatures around 15°C until the seeds germinate.
- Once the seedlings emerge, remove the cover and place the containers in a bright location with temperatures around 10-15°C.
- Thin the seedlings to one per container when they are 5-7 cm tall.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date when soil temperatures reach at least 7°C.
- Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
- Sow seeds 2.5 cm deep and 5-7 cm apart in rows spaced 30-45 cm apart.
- Water the soil and keep it moist until the seeds germinate.
- Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to 10-15 cm apart.
Growing
- Carouby De Maussane peas prefer cool weather and should be grown in spring or autumn.
- Provide a trellis or support for the plants to climb on as they grow.
- Water the plants deeply once a week, more frequently during hot, dry weather.
- Fertilize the plants once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
- Harvest the peas when the pods are plump and full, but before they become too large and tough.
- Regular harvesting will encourage the plants to produce more peas.
- After harvesting, cut the plants at the base and compost them.
