Black caraway (Nigella sativa) is a plant that is commonly used for culinary and medicinal purposes. It is also known by several other names, including black cumin, black seed, and fennel flower. The plant produces small, black, aromatic seeds that are commonly used as a spice in Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine. In addition to its culinary uses, black caraway has a long history of medicinal use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for the treatment of various ailments, such as asthma, allergies, digestive issues, and skin problems. Studies have also suggested that the seeds may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Black Caraway (Nigella)

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last frost date in the spring.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Black Caraway prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Black Caraway can re-seed itself, so be sure to deadhead if you don't want it to spread.
  • Harvest the seeds when the seed pods have turned brown and the seeds are hard to the touch.
  • Store harvested seeds in a cool, dry place in an airtight container.
