Lettuce 'Salad Bowl' is a loose-leaf lettuce variety that is perfect for growing in containers or small gardens. This lettuce is a cut-and-come-again type, meaning that it will continue to produce fresh leaves after being harvested. The leaves are deeply lobed and bright green in colour, with a tender and mild flavour. 'Salad Bowl' lettuce is fast-growing and can be harvested as soon as 35 days after sowing, making it an ideal choice for gardeners who want quick and easy-to-grow greens. It is also resistant to bolting in hot weather, making it a reliable choice for summer salads.

Sowing and Growing Guide
Salad Bowl Lettuce
Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/8 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
- Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
- Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.
- Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
- Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden 2 weeks before the last expected frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked.
- Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
- Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
- Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
- Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.
Growing
- Salad Bowl lettuce prefers well-draining soil that is consistently moist.
- Water regularly, particularly during dry periods, to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
- Protect young seedlings from pests, such as slugs and snails, by using organic pest control methods or placing copper tape around the bed.
- Harvest the outer leaves when they are 4-6 inches long, leaving the inner leaves to continue growing for future harvests.
- For a continuous harvest, sow new seeds every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season.
