Sowing and Growing Guide

Parris Island Cos Romaine Lettuce

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, transplant them into individual containers.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least 4 true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 1-2 inches tall, leaving 8-12 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Parris Island Cos Romaine Lettuce prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks.
  • Harvest leaves when they are large enough to use, but before they begin to bolt (produce a flower stalk).
  • Protect lettuce from pests, such as slugs, aphids, and cutworms.
  • Rotate lettuce to a new location in the garden every year to reduce the risk of disease.
