Little Gem lettuce is a small, crisp, and sweet lettuce variety that is perfect for salads. It is a compact lettuce that is easy to grow and is a great choice for container gardening. The heads of the lettuce are about 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide, with tightly packed leaves that are crunchy and juicy. It is a cool-weather crop that is ideal for spring and autumn plantings. It is also resistant to most lettuce diseases and pests, making it a low-maintenance plant.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Little Gem Lettuce

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-65°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 weeks old and have at least 2 sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 4 inches apart in rows spaced 8-12 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 8 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Little Gem lettuce prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Protect from pests, such as slugs and snails, by using physical barriers or organic pest control methods.
  • Harvest when heads are small and compact, but before they begin to elongate and form a stalk.
  • Store harvested lettuce in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to a week.
