Arctic King lettuce is a variety of crisp head lettuce that is known for its cold tolerance and ability to grow in cooler climates. The plant has a compact and tight head with light green leaves that have a crisp texture and a sweet, mild flavour. It is a popular choice for gardeners in regions with short growing seasons or cool summer temperatures, as it can tolerate temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C). Arctic King lettuce grows to about 8-10 inches in height and can be harvested in about 75-80 days after planting.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Arctic King Lettuce

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/8 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before transplanting.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a location with well-draining soil that receives full sun to part shade.
  • Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 1-2 inches tall, leaving 6-12 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Arctic King lettuce prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Protect young seedlings from pests, such as slugs and snails, by using a slug and snail bait.
  • Harvest outer leaves when they are large enough to eat, leaving the inner leaves to continue growing.
  • Store harvested lettuce in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to a week.
