Sowing and Growing Guide
Arctic King Lettuce
Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/8 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
- Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
- Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
- Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
- Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before transplanting.
Outdoor Sowing
- Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
- Choose a location with well-draining soil that receives full sun to part shade.
- Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
- Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
- Thin seedlings when they are 1-2 inches tall, leaving 6-12 inches between plants.
Growing
- Arctic King lettuce prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
- Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
- Protect young seedlings from pests, such as slugs and snails, by using a slug and snail bait.
- Harvest outer leaves when they are large enough to eat, leaving the inner leaves to continue growing.
- Store harvested lettuce in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to a week.
