Sowing and Growing Guide

Dwarf Green Curled Kale

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 weeks old and have 4-6 true leaves, after hardening them off for a week.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date or as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 10-12 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Dwarf Green Curled kale prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Protect young seedlings from pests, such as cabbage worms and aphids, by covering with a floating row cover or applying an organic insecticide.
  • Harvest leaves when they are young and tender, starting from the bottom of the plant and working your way up. Alternatively, you can cut the entire plant at once.
  • Kale can be harvested until it bolts in hot weather, which usually occurs in late spring or early summer.
