American land cress, also known as winter cress or creasy greens, is a leafy green vegetable that is native to North America. It is a member of the mustard family and has a flavour that is similar to watercress, with a slightly peppery and tangy taste. American land cress is a cool season crop that can be grown in both spring and fall, and is often used as a substitute for watercress in recipes. The plant grows to a height of 8-12 inches and has small, dark green leaves that form a rosette close to the ground. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial to full sun exposure. American land cress is easy to grow and is a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as iron and calcium. It can be eaten raw in salads or used in soups, stews, and other dishes.

Sowing and Growing Guide

American Land Garden Cress

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-65°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 5-10 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 6-12 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 6-12 inches between plants.

Growing

  • American Land Garden Cress prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Harvest leaves when they are 2-3 inches long and have a slightly peppery flavor.
  • Leaves can be harvested throughout the growing season, but flavor is best when plants are young.
  • Can be grown as a cut-and-come-again crop, or harvested all at once.
