This variety of courgette grows on a compact, bushy plant that typically reaches about 2-3 feet tall and wide. Courgette Black Beauty is known for its tender and flavourful flesh, which makes it a popular choice for a variety of dishes. This plant is relatively easy to grow and thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. It is a prolific producer, often yielding multiple fruits per plant throughout the growing season.

Indoor Sowing:

  • Sow the seeds 1cm deep and cover with compost.
  • Water gently and keep the soil moist.
  • Place the tray or pots in a propagator or cover with a clear plastic bag.

  • Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves, transplant them to individual 9cm pots.
  • Grow on in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill until the plants are large enough to be planted outside, usually in late May or early June.

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds directly outside from mid-May to late June.
  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil.
  • Prepare the soil by digging in organic matter and raking it level.
  • Sow the seeds 2cm deep and cover with soil.
  • Water gently and keep the soil moist.
  • Thin the seedlings to one per station once they are large enough to handle.
  • Protect young plants from slugs and snails.

Growing:

  • Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil.

  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every two weeks.
  • Harvest the courgettes when they are 10-15cm long for the best flavor and texture.
