Polka dot mixed cornflower is a type of flowering plant that is popular for its colourful blooms and easy-to-grow nature. This variety of cornflower produces vibrant blooms in shades of pink, purple, blue, and white, with each flower featuring a distinctive polka dot pattern. The plant itself grows to be about 24-36 inches tall, with narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are a bluish-green colour. It's a hardy annual that is easy to grow from seed, and it thrives in a variety of soil types and light conditions. It blooms in mid to late summer, attracting bees and butterflies to its nectar-rich flowers. These plants are often used in cut flower arrangements, and they are also a popular choice for garden borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows. Overall, Polka Dot Mixed Cornflower is a beautiful and versatile plant that adds colour and interest to any garden or landscape.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Polka Dot Mixed Cornflower

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds in trays or pots of seed compost from late winter to early spring (February to March).
  • Place in a propagator or cover with a plastic bag and keep at a temperature of 15-20°C (59-68°F) until germination.
  • Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into individual pots and grow on in cooler conditions until they are well established.
  • Plant outside in late spring or early summer (May to June) once all risk of frost has passed and the seedlings are large enough to handle.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds outdoors in the autumn (September to October) or in the spring (March to April) in a prepared seedbed.
  • Sow thinly in rows 30cm (12in) apart and cover lightly with soil.
  • Thin seedlings to 15cm (6in) apart when large enough to handle.
  • Water well after sowing and during dry spells.

Growing

  • Choose a sunny or partially shaded site with well-drained soil.
  • Water regularly during dry spells and feed with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
  • Deadhead regularly to encourage continuous flowering.
  • Cut flowers for indoor arrangements when they are fully open.
  • Protect from slugs and snails.
