Sowing and Growing Guide
Chives
Indoor Sowing
- Start seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area.
- Fill a seed tray or pot with seed starting soil.
- Sow the chive seeds on top of the soil, pressing them down gently. Do not cover them with soil.
- Mist the soil with water to keep it moist. Cover the tray or pot with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse effect.
- Keep the tray or pot in a warm, sunny location. Chives require plenty of light to grow.
- Once the seedlings have grown to about 4 inches tall and have several sets of leaves, they are ready to be transplanted outside.
Outdoor Sowing
- Wait until after the last frost date in your area to plant chive seeds directly in the ground.
- Choose a location that gets plenty of sunlight and has well-draining soil.
- Loosen the soil to a depth of about 6-8 inches and remove any rocks or debris.
- Sow the chive seeds on top of the soil, pressing them down gently. Do not cover them with soil.
- Water the seeds immediately after planting and keep the soil moist until the seedlings emerge.
- Thin the seedlings to about 6-8 inches apart once they have grown to about 2-3 inches tall.
Growing
- Chives prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
- Water the plants regularly, especially during dry spells.
- Fertilize with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
- Harvest the chives by cutting the leaves to about 2 inches above the ground with scissors or pruning shears. The leaves will grow back quickly.
