Chives are a type of herb that belong to the onion family, and are known for their mild onion flavour and delicate, grass-like appearance. They are commonly used in cooking to add a subtle onion flavour to dishes without overpowering other flavours. Chives can be chopped finely and added to salads, soups, and sauces, or used as a garnish for baked potatoes, omelettes, and other dishes. Why not try making your own cream cheese and sour cream dips? Chives are a good source of vitamins A and C, and contain antioxidants that may help protect against certain types of cancer. They are also easy to grow and can be grown indoors or outdoors.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Chives

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area.
  • Fill a seed tray or pot with seed starting soil.
  • Sow the chive seeds on top of the soil, pressing them down gently. Do not cover them with soil.
  • Mist the soil with water to keep it moist. Cover the tray or pot with plastic wrap to create a greenhouse effect.
  • Keep the tray or pot in a warm, sunny location. Chives require plenty of light to grow.
  • Once the seedlings have grown to about 4 inches tall and have several sets of leaves, they are ready to be transplanted outside.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Wait until after the last frost date in your area to plant chive seeds directly in the ground.
  • Choose a location that gets plenty of sunlight and has well-draining soil.
  • Loosen the soil to a depth of about 6-8 inches and remove any rocks or debris.
  • Sow the chive seeds on top of the soil, pressing them down gently. Do not cover them with soil.
  • Water the seeds immediately after planting and keep the soil moist until the seedlings emerge.
  • Thin the seedlings to about 6-8 inches apart once they have grown to about 2-3 inches tall.

Growing

  • Chives prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water the plants regularly, especially during dry spells.
  • Fertilize with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
  • Harvest the chives by cutting the leaves to about 2 inches above the ground with scissors or pruning shears. The leaves will grow back quickly.
