Sowing and Growing Guide

Rainbow Mix Swiss Chard

Indoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost date
  • Use a good quality seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/2 inch deep
  • Keep soil moist and warm (around 70°F) until germination, which should occur within 7-14 days
  • Once seedlings have developed their second set of true leaves, they can be transplanted outdoors

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost date, when soil temperature is around 50-75°F
  • Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart, in rows 12-18 inches apart
  • Thin seedlings to 6-12 inches apart
  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged

Growing:

  • Choose a location with full sun to partial shade
  • Ensure soil is fertile, well-draining, and enriched with compost or other organic matter
  • Water regularly, especially during hot and dry weather, to ensure even growth and prevent bolting
  • Harvest outer leaves when they are 6-8 inches tall, leaving the center leaves to continue growing
  • Protect plants from pests such as slugs and aphids, which can be controlled with organic pest control methods or insecticidal soap
