Cauliflower Igloo is a variety of cauliflower that is known for its hardiness and ability to withstand colder temperatures, making it a good choice for growing in cooler climates or during the winter months. The heads are medium-sized, white, and have a good flavor. This variety is also resistant to clubroot, a soil-borne disease that can affect cauliflower and other brassicas.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Igloo Cauliflower

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds ¼ inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 weeks old and have at least 2-3 true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep and 18-24 inches apart in rows spaced 24-36 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 4-6 inches tall, leaving 18-24 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Igloo cauliflower prefers cool temperatures and consistent moisture.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize every 3-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Protect young plants from pests, such as cabbage worms and aphids, by covering with a floating row cover.
  • Harvest cauliflower heads when they are firm and white, typically 60-70 days after transplanting.
  • To keep the heads white, tie the outer leaves together over the top of the head.
