Sowing and Growing Guide

All the Year Round Cauliflower

Indoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds in early spring indoors in trays or pots filled with a good quality compost.
  • Keep the compost moist and maintain a temperature of around 60-70°F (15-20°C) for germination.
  • Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves, transplant them into larger pots.
  • Continue to care for the seedlings indoors until they are large enough to transplant outside, which should be about 5-6 weeks after sowing.

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds outdoors in a seedbed from late spring to early summer, once the soil has warmed up.
  • Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil.
  • Sow the seeds thinly in rows about 1cm deep and 30cm apart.
  • Water regularly and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Thin the seedlings to about 10cm apart once they are large enough to handle.

Growing:

  • Keep the plants well watered and weed-free throughout the growing season.
  • As the heads begin to form, blanch them by tying the outer leaves over the head to protect it from the sun.
  • Harvest the cauliflower when the heads are firm and tight, before they begin to open up.
  • Cut the heads with a sharp knife, leaving about 2 inches of stem attached.
