Pak choi Red F1 is a variety of pak choi, also known as bok choy or Chinese cabbage, characterized by its vibrant red-purple colouration. This variety is a hybrid, known for its uniform shape, crispy texture, and attractive appearance. Pak choi Red F1 maintains the mild, mustard-like flavour typical of pak choi, making it a versatile ingredient in various Asian-inspired dishes, salads, stir-fries, and soups. Its colorful leaves add visual interest to culinary creations and make it a popular choice for both home gardeners and professional chefs seeking to enhance the visual appeal of their dishes. Additionally, like other pak choi varieties, Red F1 is relatively easy to grow, preferring well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Pak Choi Red F1

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves, after the last expected frost date.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a location with well-draining soil that receives partial shade to full sun.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 4-6 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving 6-8 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Pak Choi Red F1 prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Harvest leaves as needed, taking care not to remove more than one-third of the plant at a time.
  • Protect from pests, such as aphids and cabbage worms, by using row covers or applying organic insecticides.
  • Harvest the entire plant when it reaches full size, typically about 6-8 inches tall, by cutting it at the base with a sharp knife.
