Sowing and Growing Guide
Durham Early Spring Green Cabbage
Indoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds in trays or modules filled with seed compost in late winter or early spring
- Plant one seed per module or thin to one seedling per module after germination
- Keep the soil moist and place in a warm, bright spot
- Transplant seedlings outside after 4-6 weeks, once they have developed their second set of leaves
Outdoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds directly into prepared soil in late summer or early autumn
- Plant seeds 1cm deep and 30cm apart, in rows spaced 30cm apart
- Water regularly and keep the area free of weeds
- Thin seedlings to one plant every 30cm once they are big enough to handle
Growing:
- Cabbage prefers a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter
- Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged
- Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season
- Protect young plants from pests such as slugs and cabbage root fly
