Detroit Globe beetroot is a popular heirloom variety known for its smooth, round roots and deep red flesh. Detroit Globe Beetroot

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 60-70°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 3-4 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 3-4 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Detroit Dark Red beetroot prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Harvest beetroot when they are 2-3 inches in diameter and the top of the beetroot is visible above the soil line.
  • For best storage, leave 1-2 inches of stem attached to the beetroot and store in a cool, dark place, such as a root cellar or refrigerator.
