Detroit Globe beetroot is a popular heirloom variety known for its smooth, round roots and deep red flesh. It is a fast-growing and reliable variety, producing uniform beets that are sweet, tender, and ideal for roasting, boiling, or pickling. The plants grow to about 30 cm (12 inches) in height, with lush green leaves that can also be harvested and used like spinach. Detroit Globe is resistant to bolting and performs well in a variety of soil conditions.

  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, 2-3 seeds per cell.

  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, thin them to one per cell.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil that has been amended with compost.
  • Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist and weed-free.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 3-4 inches tall, leaving 3-4 inches between plants.

Growing

  • Detroit Dark Red beetroot prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
