Our Dwarf Italian Borlotto Bean Lingua Di Fuoco bean is the bush version of the taller variety. As the pods ripen to their "tounge of fire" apperance they reach around 8 inches (20cm) long. This bush variety is very productive and the beans are white with red speckles with go great in a soup. These can be harvested immature or wait until mature to harvest the beans inside. These beans have a fantastic flavour and have been used in Italian heritage cooking for over 100 years. Once dried the beans can last for many years.

Borlotto Lingua Fuoco Nano Dwarf Bean

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds indoors from mid-April to mid-May in pots or modules filled with multi-purpose compost.
  • Plant the seeds 5cm deep and water well.
  • Keep the pots/modules in a warm, bright location, such as a windowsill or greenhouse.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the soil from mid-May to mid-June.
  • Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil.
  • Plant the seeds 5cm deep and 20cm apart in rows that are 45-60cm apart.
  • Water well and keep the soil moist.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days.

Growing

  • Water the plants regularly, especially during dry spells.
  • Provide support for the plants to climb on, such as stakes or trellises.
  • Pinch out the growing tips of the plants when they reach the desired height to encourage bushy growth.
  • Harvest the beans when they are plump and the pods have started to dry out, usually in August or September.
