Climbing French Blue Lake beans are a popular variety of pole bean that has tender delicious pods with high yields. The plants can grow up to 8-10 feet tall and require a trellis or support system to climb on. The beans are a beautiful blue-green colour and have a crisp, meaty texture with a sweet, nutty flavour. Climbing French Blue Lake beans are typically harvested when the pods are still young and tender, at around 6-7 inches in length. This variety of bean is easy to grow and thrives in warm, sunny locations with well-drained soil. The plants are also resistant to many common bean diseases, making them a reliable choice for gardeners. Climbing French Blue Lake beans can be steamed, sautéed, or roasted for a delicious side dish.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Dwarf French Climbing Blue Lake Bean

Indoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds in pots or trays indoors from mid-spring to early summer, using a good quality compost.
  • Plant the seeds about 2-3 cm deep, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Place the pots or trays in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight.
  • When the seedlings have grown to about 8 cm tall, they can be transplanted outdoors in their final positions.

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds directly into the ground from late spring to early summer, when the soil has warmed up.
  • Plant the seeds about 2-3 cm deep, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.
  • When the seedlings have grown to about 8 cm tall, thin them to a spacing of about 20 cm apart.

Growing:

  • Water the plants regularly, particularly during dry spells.
  • Provide support for the plants as they grow, using canes or netting.
  • Pinch out the top of the plants when they reach their desired height, to encourage bushier growth.
  • Harvest the beans when they are about 10-15 cm long and the pods are well filled.
