Imperial Green Longpod broad beans are a popular variety of broad bean that has   a delicious, meaty texture and delicate flavour. The plants can grow up to 3-4 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide, with long, slender pods that can reach up to 10 inches in length. The pods are bright green in colour and have a slightly curved shape, with plump, flavourful beans inside. Imperial Green Longpod broad beans are typically harvested when the pods are still young and tender, at around 6-8 inches in length. This variety of broad bean is easy to grow and thrives in cool, moist climates, making it an ideal choice for growing in the UK. The beans are high in protein and fibre, making them a nutritious addition to any diet. Imperial Green Longpod broad beans are a popular ingredient in a variety of dishes, including soups, stews, and salads. They are also delicious when roasted or grilled, and can be used to make a flavourful puree or dip.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Imperial Green Longpod Broad Bean

Indoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds in pots or trays indoors from late autumn to mid-winter, using a good quality compost.
  • Plant the seeds about 2-3 cm deep, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Place the pots or trays in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight.
  • When the seedlings have grown to about 8 cm tall, they can be transplanted outdoors in their final positions.

Outdoor Sowing:

  • Sow seeds directly into the ground from early spring to early summer, when the soil has warmed up and the risk of frost has passed.
  • Plant the seeds about 5 cm deep, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.
  • When the seedlings have grown to about 8 cm tall, thin them to a spacing of about 20 cm apart.

Growing:

  • Water the plants regularly, particularly during dry spells.
  • Provide support for the plants as they grow, using canes or netting.
  • Pinch out the top of the plants when they reach their desired height, to encourage bushier growth.
  • Harvest the beans when they are about 10-15 cm long and the pods are well filled.
