Sowing and Growing Guide
Imperial Green Longpod Broad Bean
Indoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds in pots or trays indoors from late autumn to mid-winter, using a good quality compost.
- Plant the seeds about 2-3 cm deep, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Place the pots or trays in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight.
- When the seedlings have grown to about 8 cm tall, they can be transplanted outdoors in their final positions.
Outdoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds directly into the ground from early spring to early summer, when the soil has warmed up and the risk of frost has passed.
- Plant the seeds about 5 cm deep, and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.
- When the seedlings have grown to about 8 cm tall, thin them to a spacing of about 20 cm apart.
Growing:
- Water the plants regularly, particularly during dry spells.
- Provide support for the plants as they grow, using canes or netting.
- Pinch out the top of the plants when they reach their desired height, to encourage bushier growth.
- Harvest the beans when they are about 10-15 cm long and the pods are well filled.
