Aquadulce Claudia broad bean is a popular heirloom variety of broad bean that has a rich, nutty flavour and meaty texture. The plant is an annual that can grow up to 3 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide, with sturdy stems and lush green foliage. Aquadulce Claudia broad beans are typically harvested when they are still young and tender, at around 4-5 inches in length. They have a distinctive shape, with a flat, oval shape and a pronounced curve on one end. This variety is known for its excellent culinary qualities, and is a popular ingredient in soups, stews, and salads. It is also high in protein and fibre, making it a nutritious addition to any diet. Aquadulce Claudia broad beans are easy to grow and thrive in cool, moist climates, making them an ideal choice for UK gardens.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Aquadulce Claudia Broad Bean

Indoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds indoors in 7.5cm (3in) pots from late October to early November.
  • Fill pots with seed compost and sow one seed per pot, pushing it 5cm (2in) deep.
  • Water well after sowing and place the pots in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse to germinate.
  • Once germinated, keep the seedlings in a cool and light location until they're ready to be planted outdoors in spring.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly outdoors from February to April, weather permitting.
  • Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-draining soil.
  • Sow seeds 5cm (2in) deep and 20cm (8in) apart, in rows spaced 60cm (24in) apart.
  • Water well after sowing and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Thin seedlings to one every 20cm (8in) once they've reached about 10cm (4in) tall.

Growing

  • Keep the plants well-watered during dry periods.
  • Support the plants with stakes or canes to prevent them from falling over in windy weather.
  • Pinch out the tips of the plants when they reach about 20cm (8in) tall to encourage bushier growth.
  • Harvest the pods when they've filled out and before the beans inside start to bulge too much.
  • The pods can be eaten when young and tender, or left to mature and then shelled before eating the beans inside.
