Cinnamon basil is a unique variety of basil that has a sweet and spicy aroma, reminiscent of cinnamon and clove. The plant has bright green leaves with a slightly purple tinge, and can grow up to 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide. It is an annual herb that requires well-drained soil to thrive. Basil Cinnamon is a popular ingredient in both sweet and savoury dishes, adding a warm, spicy note to everything from fruit salads and desserts to curries and stir-fries. It can also be used to make a flavourful tea, or as a garnish for cocktails and other beverages.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Cinnamon Basil

  • Indoor Sowing:

    • Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date
    • Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting tray filled with moistened seed-starting mix
    • Keep soil moist and warm (around 70°F) until germination, which usually takes 7-10 days
    • Once seedlings have 2-3 sets of leaves, transplant them to individual pots
    • Keep plants in a warm, sunny location and water regularly
  • Outdoor Sowing:

    • Wait until after the last frost date to sow seeds outdoors
    • Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil
    • Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep and 6-12 inches apart
    • Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge, then water regularly
    • Thin seedlings to 6-12 inches apart once they have 2-3 sets of leaves
  • Growing:

    • Cinnamon Basil prefers full sun and well-draining soil
    • Water regularly, especially during dry periods
    • Pinch off flower buds to encourage bushier growth and prolong harvest
    • Harvest leaves as needed once the plant is 6-8 inches tall
    • Plants can be grown indoors year-round or outdoors during the growing season
