Sowing and Growing Guide

Aubergine Long Purple

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow seeds 1/4 inch deep.
  • Keep the soil moist and at a consistent temperature of 70-80°F.
  • Seedlings should emerge in 7-14 days.
  • Once seedlings have developed their first true leaves, transplant them into individual containers.
  • Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 6-8 inches tall and have at least 4-6 leaves, after the last expected frost date.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Sow seeds directly into the garden after the last expected frost date.
  • Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil.
  • Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 18-24 inches apart in rows spaced 24-36 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Thin seedlings when they are 2-3 inches tall, leaving the strongest seedling every 18-24 inches.

Growing

  • Aubergine Long Purple prefers warm temperatures and a long growing season.
  • Water deeply once a week, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Provide support for the plants, such as stakes or cages, to prevent them from toppling over as they produce fruit.
  • Harvest fruits when they reach full size and have a glossy purple color, but before they become overripe and turn dull.
  • Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the fruits from the plant, leaving a short stem attached.
  • Store harvested aubergines in a cool, dry place or refrigerate them for longer storage.
