Aubergine Listada de Gandia is a popular heirloom variety of eggplant that originates from the town of Gandia in Valencia, Spain. This unique eggplant is known for its stunning appearance, featuring elongated fruits with white and violet stripes. The skin of the fruit is thin and tender, while the flesh inside is creamy and sweet, with few seeds. Listada de Gandia eggplants are generally harvested when they are around 8-10 inches long and 2-3 inches wide. This eggplant is a popular ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine and can be used in a variety of dishes, including stews, casseroles, and salads. It is a warm-weather crop that requires full sun and well-drained soil to thrive.

Sowing and Growing Guide

Aubergine Listada de Gandia

Indoor Sowing

  • Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • Fill seed trays with seed starting mix and sow 1-2 seeds per cell, about 1/4 inch deep.
  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and maintain a temperature of 70-75°F.
  • Once the seedlings have emerged, provide them with plenty of light, such as a grow light or a sunny windowsill.
  • When the seedlings have developed their second set of leaves, thin them to the strongest plant per cell.
  • Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days.

Outdoor Sowing

  • Wait until after the last expected frost to sow seeds directly in the garden.
  • Choose a sunny, well-drained spot in the garden with fertile soil.
  • Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep and 18-24 inches apart in rows 24-36 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until the seedlings emerge.
  • When the seedlings have developed their second set of leaves, thin them to the strongest plant per 18-24 inches.

Growing

  • Aubergines prefer warm temperatures of around 70-80°F during the day and 60-70°F at night.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks.
  • Provide support for the plants with stakes or a trellis to keep the heavy fruits off the ground.
  • Harvest the aubergines when they reach full size but before they become overripe and lose their shiny skin.
