Chioggia beetroot, also known as Candy Stripe beetroot, is a unique and visually striking variety of beetroot that has a sweet, mild flavor and stunning pink and white striped flesh. The roots can grow up to 3-4 inches in diameter and have a smooth, tender texture. Chioggia beetroot is typically harvested when the roots are still small, at around 2-3 inches in diameter. This variety of beetroot is easy to grow and thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. Chioggia beetroot is a versatile ingredient that can be used in a wide variety of dishes, it can be roasted, boiled, pickled, or grated raw into salads. Sowing and Growing Guide
Chioggia Beetroot
Indoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds indoors in modules or small pots from late winter to early spring (February to March).
- Use seed compost and sow one seed per module or pot.
- Water gently and place in a warm, bright spot.
- Seedlings should emerge within 1-2 weeks.
- Once they have developed their first true leaves, transplant into larger pots or into the garden.
Outdoor Sowing:
- Sow seeds directly into the garden from mid-spring to early summer (April to June).
- Choose a sunny, well-drained spot with fertile soil.
- Sow seeds thinly in rows about 30cm apart.
- Water gently and keep soil moist until seedlings emerge.
- Thin out seedlings to 10cm apart when they are large enough to handle.
Growing:
- Beetroot prefers a moist, fertile soil and a sunny spot.
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.
- Feed every few weeks with a balanced fertiliser.
- Harvest when roots are 3-4cm in diameter, usually 12-16 weeks after sowing.
